BANGALORE: Treatment amidst pet animals? If you don't believe it, ask the 'dogtor'. Stroking your pet dog, watching a dear deer or just sitting next to a fish tank can speed up healing and relieve tension. That's the 'pet therapy' dose St John's National Academy of Health Sciences is rapidly expanding.Widely-researched in the West, the use of pets for treatment in India on such a wide scale is said to be first.
Dogs, rabbits, spotted deer, ducks, turkeys, even crocodiles and moose. The team of consultants at the hospital is in the process of enriching its pet therapy parks with these, with permission from the forest department. "Patients who have met with accidents or have lost their mental balance often feel unwanted. Animals provide unconditional and nonjudgmental love and affection, and at times can understand them better than doctors or family members. They bring cheer to the patients and helps them develop an interest in social interaction. Unlike people, with whom our interactions may be complex, animals provide a constant source of comfort,"said St John's National Academy of Health Sciences director Dr Thomas Kalam.
Agreed a 32-year-old patient at the hospital: "It is like a daily dose of ego boost which they give me through their unconditional love. The fact is, they wait for me every evening and greet me in the same way every day, irrespective of how useless and unwanted I may have become in life after a spinal chord injury." Dr Sunny Chunkapura, working closely with patients using pet therapy, said: "We started this practice seven years ago and now it is part of the treatment procedure for trauma and psychiatric patients. They are brought to the pet therapy park every evening so that they can interact with nature and animals." Two-thirds of the 132-acres belonging to the institution is maintained as green land, in which the two pet therapy parks are situated. Since the authorities believe in holistic treatment, water fountains, ponds with aquariums and parks have been established, so patients and their visitors can take a stroll in the evening.
